How Academic Advisors & Career Advisors Work Together

Students explore career options.
Students explore career options.

You know the value of a good advisor, someone knowledgeable in a specific field and able to apply that knowledge to your interests and goals. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, students have access to staff who will be that person for them as they move forward academically and professionally. Specifically, Academic Advisors and Career Advisors (in some colleges known as a Career Coach or Career Specialist) help students make decisions, gain insight and experience, and prepare for their careers.

Academic Advisors help students learn more about the array of academic programs available at Nebraska and work with them in course selection, including how those courses apply to degree requirements. Meeting with an Academic Advisor regularly helps ensure students take the classes they need for their program and to maximize their time at Nebraska. Career Advisors help students identify careers and majors of interest and to develop plans and take action that will help them succeed in the job search. Both Academic and Career Advisors help students explore ways to make the most of their college experience. Both can connect students to campus resources and opportunities such as student organizations, education abroad, civic engagement, and study support, throughout their time at Nebraska.

The end of October brings registration for classes for spring semester. As students make decisions about classes and beyond, they can meet with their Academic Advisor and a Career Advisor for knowledgeable guidance focused on their interests and goals. Students can find their assigned Academic Advisor and identify Career Advisors in MyPlan.
