College is a time of growth and independence. In some cases, this new and exciting time can become challenging, either initially or slowly over the course of an academic career.

As a parent, you can take action and support your student by talking to them about their mental health. If you suspect your student is showing signs of stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health concerns, consider referring them to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). In addition to consultations, CAPS offers same-day access appointments for students who need immediate assistance.

To schedule an appointment with a counselor about your student’s immediate crisis, you or your student can call 402.472.7450 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. It is important to tell the staff member that your student needs a same-day access appointment due to a crisis they are experiencing. This assures that your student will get one of these appointments and put your mind at ease.

Help also is available after hours. Students can call 402.472.7450 and follow prompts to be connected with a counselor on duty for immediate support regarding their mental health.

As a parent, it is important to discuss these resources with your student so they are aware for themselves as well as for friends. To learn more about CAPS, visit https://caps.unl.edu/get-started.
