It’s spring! That means warmer days, more time outdoors and the upcoming Spring Red/White Football Game. With the resurgence in outdoor activities sometimes comes an uptick in the number of parties around campus.

As a parent, now is a good time to remind your student of the importance of their studies and making good decisions. Your student’s future begins when they are in college. Some programs (e.g. student teaching, medical/nursing schools, law schools and more) will look poorly at any criminal records, including alcohol offenses like minor in possession and inmate of a disorderly house.

If your student chooses to drink, encourage them to use protective behaviors. Examples may include:
  • Setting a drink limit and sticking to it.
  • Pour your own drinks and keep track of them.
  • Alternating alcoholic drinks with water.
  • Enjoy a snack with your beverage.
  • Hang out with friends you know and trust.

You’re not alone in talking to your student about alcohol. The Power of Parenting website provides information about the drinking culture at Nebraska and tips for communicating with your student.
