Benefits, expected costs for NMSSI courses

MATH 804P: Problem Solving - Summer 2011
MATH 804P: Problem Solving - Summer 2011

Because of NebraskaMATH, a grant from the National Science Foundation that supports Primarily Math, teachers in the Primarily Math program have been able to take 18-21 credit hours at no cost to them for tuition or fees. For many of you, this has meant an increase in pay based on graduate credits earned.

To continue your graduate education will, of course, mean you have to start paying for tuition and fees. We estimate the full cost of taking one graduate course on the UNL campus to be $1010.45*. The NMSSI program was designed to make graduate education more affordable for Nebraska math teachers by discounting tuition 20%. In addition, a limited amount of funds are available to offer teachers a $300 supplemental fellowship.

Priority for these supplemental fellowships will go to teachers who register for a course and apply for a fellowship by April 28, 2013. To support Primarily Math teachers, a minimum of 30 supplemental fellowships will be reserved for Primarily Math teachers as long as they complete the application process by this date. With the aid of a supplemental fellowship, the cost for one course will drop to $539.45*. The cost is even lower for courses taken outside Lincoln: $465.05* will cover the costs of an off-campus courses as UNL will greatly reduce the Program and Facilities Fee if all Summer 2013 courses are taken outside Lincoln.

Here are comments from some of your peers in response to NMSSI courses for elementary teachers:

"I am leaving with fantastic resources. I have an understanding of the math and how to implement problem solving."

"This course expanded my confidence and challenged me to challenge my students at a deeper level."

"It cemented the idea I love math!"

Add it up. In quality and cost, NMSSI graduate courses are a great deal for Nebraska teachers.
