TEAC 890: Responsive Instruction in the Classroom, Summer 2012
TEAC 890: Responsive Instruction in the Classroom, Summer 2012

To support the continuing education goals of Primarily Math teachers and all elementary teachers, several Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) classes will be offered this summer in six Nebraska locations with Primarily Math teachers in mind. While you are our target audience, these courses are open to any elementary teacher wanting to continue their education, so consider inviting a colleague to join you.

As a reminder, all Nebraska teachers receive a 20% tuition discount for NMSSI courses. A simple application allows you to apply for fellowships of up to $300 to further reduce costs.

Here are just some of the courses being offered to elementary teachers:

Education courses:
i) TEAC 890, Responsive Instruction in the Mathematics Classroom, is a pedagogy course for elementary and middle level teachers. TEAC 801, Curriculum Inquiry is a required course for the MA degree in TLTE.
ii) We have arranged for two sections (one in Lincoln and one in Omaha) of TEAC 801 which will emphasize teaching math in the elementary grades.
iii) In addition, teachers who want to pursue the MA degree will also want to consider taking TEAC 800 this summer. This course is offered online and as such is not part of the NMSSI program, but it is a required course for the MA degree from TLTE.

Math courses:
i) MATH 896/803P, Algebraic Thinking in the Elementary Classroom, will be offered in four locations
ii) MATH 896/804P, Problem Solving & Critical Thinking in the Elementary Classroom, will be offered in two locations.
iii) In addition, although the target audience is Grade 3-7 teachers, we are confident that Primarily Math teachers would be successful in Math 800T, Mathematics as a Second Language, and would find it a very valuable course. It will be offered in four locations.

Here are comments from peers who have taken some of these courses:

"I really learned a lot. I wish someone could have explained algebra in this way when I first took it."

"The content presented during class was excellent. The content related to the curriculum I teach. The activities we participated in were helpful in solidifying the concepts."
