Earn your master's degree through TLTE

Primarily Math Cohort 4 Lincoln
Primarily Math Cohort 4 Lincoln

As a participant in Primarily Math you will be completing or have completed six graduate level classes that could count toward a master's degree in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education (TLTE). Nearly 50% of you have completed the leadership course, bringing the course count up to seven. Once you satisfactorily complete these courses (18 credit hours), in summer 2013, you will have completed at least half the course work necessary for a master's degree in TLTE. A master's degree requires 36 graduate credit hours and a summative project.

What remains for you in a master's degree program are:

1) Three required courses (9 credit hours): TEAC 800 Inquiry into Teaching and Learning, TEAC 801 Curriculum Inquiry, and TEAC 889 Masters Seminar.

2) Three additional graduate level courses (9 credit hours) of your choice and your advisor's approval. (Advisors are identified upon acceptance into the program.)

3) You will do a culminating project for your master's degree in the context of the TEAC 889 seminar. The culminating work for the degree is defined by you and your advisor. The master's seminar focuses on the work needed to complete this capstone project and is done as independent work under the advisor's supervision.

The deadline to apply for a master's degree is May 1, 2013. Please go to the following web site to get more information about the application procedures and look at information related to the specific master’s degree "M.A. Option II."

http://cehs.unl.edu/tlte/graduate/masters/MastersProcess.shtml

You will need to follow the application checklist for M.A./M.Ed. and apply through the electronic system called GAMES. Directions are found on the website.
Three things you need to submit along with your application include:

1) Goal Statement — take this writing seriously and give thought to why you want to pursue a master's degree. Look carefully at the writing prompt.

2) Resume

3) Three letters of Recommendation—two of these recommendations can come from your Primarily Math application. Let Ruth Heaton know if you want to use those letters. We can locate them and include them with your TLTE application. You will still need to enter those people's names as recommendations in GAMES but we can upload the recommendations. You will need to get a NEW third recommendation. The recommendation should come from someone who can speak to your ability to be successful at graduate level coursework.

If you are interested in pursuing a TLTE master’s degree it is important you apply by the May 1 deadline. This is especially important to complete this process quickly if you have already completed the Primarily Math program as it is preferable that acceptance into the program occur prior to the completion of 18 credit hours. Should you be accepted, you need to be assigned an advisor and complete the paperwork for a program of study for your master's degree and submit it to UNL Graduate Studies prior to completing any additional coursework.

Please contact Ruth Heaton (rheaton1@unl.edu) if you have any questions.
