1. How long have you been at your institution?
28 years
2. What inspired you to get involved in S-STEM work?
Professor Jim Lewis at UNL approached me and our dean about getting 2 YR colleges involved in S-STEM work. That started my S-STEM work. My main motivation is to get more students in STEM areas by providing them scholarships and mentoring.
3. What is your favorite class to teach?
Calculus courses
4. What advice would you give someone who wants to work in a closer partnership between 2YC and 4YC?
Be open to collaborative work and be willing to invest time and effort.
5. What is the current goal of your PLC?
To make course articulation process between 2YC and 4YC smoother, make faculty and advisers aware of the processes and have regular communication between schools.
6. What skill do you think is most valuable for students considering a STEM career?
Critical thinking and problem solving.
7. What is a misconception about PLCs that you want to address?
It is that students at 2YC don’t have capacity or motivation to pursue a STEM career.
8. Tell us about a most rewarding experience that you have had during your STEM career.
Implementation of Engineering and Computer Science classes at SCC and development of upper level math courses. This has allowed a range of students over years to start their coursework at SCC and continue to pursue studies in various STEM fields at 4YC.
