Is STEM Research for Everyone? LS-NSSA and PRISM Project Says Yes!

Our aim is to provide an authentic research experience for first- and second-year undergraduate students with no research experience majoring in any STEM discipline(s) in a flexible setting through a collaboration between four-year institutions and community colleges. Addressing disparities in research opportunities for underrepresented students, especially at community colleges, is critical for promoting equity and diversity in academia. Underrepresented students, including those from racial and ethnic minority groups, low-income backgrounds, first-generation college students, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ students, often face systemic barriers that limit their access to research experiences. This program provides undergraduate research opportunities for underrepresented students in community colleges, examines existing challenges, and teaches transferable and universal skills using epidemiology as the focus. We were able to engage underrepresented and low-income students in an initial research project that did not require a significant amount of time or any previous exposure to research. Students’ perception of belonging increased from pre- to post-participation for both students from two- and four-year institutions.
