Majors: Geography and Mathematics Education
Hometown: Ann Arbor, Michigan
Year at UNL: Sophomore

Favorite book and why:
The Lorax, because it helps instill an appreciation for the environment and sustainability in people of all ages especially children

Favorite movie and why:
WALL-E, it is a cute movie and it helps show children the importance of caring for nature and the adverse impacts that humans can have if we are not careful.

Why are you studying your chosen majors?:
I came to UNL being undeclared, but with a love for helping others and a passion for learning about almost everything, I see Math Education and Geography as the perfect fit for myself. Geography has always been an interest of mine. Studying geography allows me to explore many of my interests including the environment, the physical earth, human geography, maps & GIS, and even history. On the other hand my past teachers and professors have had a tremendous impact on me, and I love working with others specifically children, so I knew that teaching would be a great fit. It so rewarding to see the direct impact that I can have with helping others, especially in seemingly complex subjects such as mathematics.

What are some of the best/most interesting classes you’ve taken?
Some of my most interesting classes that I have taken include Geog155 Physical Geography and Geog217 Principles of GIS. Both of these classes were very interesting and had amazing professors.

What are your suggestions for new/other majors? Also, why should someone in another major chose your major?
Think about what makes you happy and what you enjoy putting a lot of effort towards. For me that is Education and Geography. It may be tempting to pursue something that others want you to do, but I would encourage others to try to listen to what you really want to do. Both Geography and Math Education build off my passions in both of those respected areas which has allowed me to genuinely enjoy my college experience thus far.

Tell us about your study abroad/internship/extra-curricular experiences?
I feel very fortunate for all the opportunities that I have been able to get involved with. I am currently an Intern for the Nebraska Department of Education and also work for the University Mathematics Department as a Learning Assistant for Math104 classes. I am also the Service Chair for the Honors Ambassadors, an Honors Peer Mentor, and a member of the ASUN Student Government Environmental Sustainability committee. These Involvements have allowed me to gain valuable experience and meet others with similar interests. In the summer I am a summer camp counselor working with children ages 4-16 and I also volunteer weekly at an equine rescue. I would encourage others to get involved in your respective interests and you'll be surprised with all the amazing opportunities. For example, I wouldn't have expected to be working for the Nebraska Department of Education as a sophomore, but unique opportunities seem to present themselves when you pursue your interests.

What are you post-graduation plans?
Currently I am planning on being a High School or Middle School Math teacher (Hopefully Geography also) and possibly a cross country coach after graduation. I am also thinking about getting my Masters and then a Doctorate in Education (EdD) in Higher Ed/Education leadership, then pursuing a career in higher Ed, but I'm not sure if I'll want to ever leave teaching.
