Qualifications Required: Current enrollment in a Diploma, Associates Degree, or Bachelor’s Degree program at 2-year or 4-year college or university located in Nebraska. Preference will be given to undergraduate students with majors in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, or an allied field involving remote sensing, aerial imagery, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

General Summary: The Agricultural Science Program at Central Community College at Hastings NE is looking for an undergraduate student to help us develop a high-throughput method to measure tree characteristics in an urban forest. The student will use the newest in Unmanned Aerial Systems
(aka drones) technology to estimate heights of trees located on the Hastings Campus. The research performed has publication potential, and the student’s contribution will influence the future direction of urban forestry management on the three campuses and 3 learning centers of CCC.
This project is funded by a grant through Undergraduate Research Experiences at Small Colleges and Universities from Nebraska Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (Nebraska EPSCor).

Skills Learned and Experience Gained include:
• Operating rotary and fixed wing unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to collect aerial imagery
• Learning how to evaluate RGB and Multi-Spectral Imagery
• Creating Ortho-mosaic maps of Hastings Campus
• Learning botanical and common names of campus trees
• Collecting height using a laser rangefinder and Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) of campus trees
• Collecting GPS coordinates of individual trees using a hand-held GPS receiver
• Collecting, Analyzing, Summarizing Tree Characteristics and Aerial Imagery Data
• Submitting weekly reports on project progress and results
• Submit a scientific report summarizing research findings

• Ability to gather, organize, summarize, and interpret various forms of information

• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated mathematics skills
• Ability to use Microsoft Office Applications of Word and Excel
• Previous experience in flying UAS or Urban Forestry not required
• Previous experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) not required
