The site will continue to use Do IT Yourself “DIY” packets for paper returns or electronically filing (Federal Return only). This is the first year that UNL International Students and Scholars on F-1 and J-1 visas can file a free federal non-resident return electronically using TaxSlayer.

Students and scholars will need to schedule an in-person or Zoom appointment at https://vita.unl.edu/signup. Once an appointment is scheduled, students and scholars will receive an email with instructions on how to prepare their federal return and a link for TaxSlayer. The federal return, Form 1040NR, must be completed prior to the appointment.

If the student or scholar has questions or want their return reviewed prior to transmitting, they can use their scheduled appointment to meet with a tax consultant. The student or scholar will prepare their own tax return — which is different from other years.

Tax consultants will not prepare returns. Students and scholars will continue to complete a state tax return at the Nebraska Department of Revenue.

Questions can be sent via email to international-vita@unl.edu.
