Seminars This Week: Precision Ag, Hurricanes, and Ticks

Three seminars are scheduled this week in Hardin Hall, beginning with the School of Natural Resources Seminar Series on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The Geography and Applied Ecology seminar series’ will both host talks on Friday, Oct. 19.

On Wednesday, Stamatis Stamatiadis—director of the Soil Ecology & Biotechnology Laboratory at the Gaia Environmental Research and Education Center in Athens, Greece—will present "An EU-Funded Project for Demonstrating Concepts and Technologies of Precision Agriculture" in the Hardin Hall auditorium at 3:30 p.m.

Stamantiadis, an adjunct professor in UNL's Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, will discuss the "Hydrosense Project" which employed "precision agriculture for integrated crop management." The result was a significant savings in irrigation and chemicals.

The Geography General Seminar Series continues Friday, Oct. 19, at 2:30 p.m. in room 228 at Hardin Hall with Leilani Arthurs' "Regional Differences and Similarities in Novice Conceptions about Hurricane Formation." Arthurs is an assistant professor in UNL Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

Roberto Cortinas, an assistant professor in entomology/veterinary and biomedical sciences at UNL, is the featured speaker of the Applied Ecology series. His seminar, "Expansion of Tick Distribution in North America, with Particular Reference to Lone Star Ticks in Nebraska," is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. in Hardin Hall room 163.
