Agronomy and Horticulture faculty, including S. Carolina “Caro” Córdova, Nicolas “Nic” McMillan and Brooke McWherter have been welcomed as new Fellows of the Center for Great Plains Studies.
Fellows constitute the core of the Center for Great Plains Studies intellectual community at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. They publish research and book reviews in the center’s journals, give talks as Olson lecturers, speak at the annual Great Plains conference and advise the Great Plains Art Museum. They sit on the Board of Governors and choose the Stubbendieck Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize winner. Their work helps the center meet its mission of increasing understanding of and appreciation for the people, cultures, and natural environment of the Great Plains.
Córdova is an assistant professor and statewide soil health specialist and specializes in soil health, sustainable intensification of agriculture, soil carbon sequestration, carbon farming, resilient agroecosystems, soil-plant-atmosphere interactions, low-input and high-diversity systems, perennial crops, and rural and urban farming.
McMillan is an assistant professor and specializes in interactions between large herbivores and landscape disturbances, landscape heterogeneity, the role of large herbivores in shaping grassland dynamics and grasslands.
McWherter is an assistant professor and specializes in human dimensions of agriculture, water and wildlife, and decision-making and engagement with rural community members and supporting organizations.
