On Friday, Feb. 3, Sustain UNL had our RecycleMania kick-off event, stationed in front of the City Campus Union with an enormous palette of compressed recyclables. As we fought off the cold we asked students, faculty, and staff to “make the pledge to recycle” and we were very happy with the great response we received from everyone.
RecycleMania is an eight-week competition among college and university recycling programs in the United States and Canada. During eight weeks each spring, schools compete to reduce waste, increase recycling and raise awareness of conservation issues across campus. This will be the third consecutive year that Sustain UNL has led our university in this green-conscious competition.
Sustain UNL, once known as the Environmental Resource Center (ERC), is an active, recognized student organization housed in the School of Natural Resources. Sustain UNL promotes recycling, reusing and rethinking how we as students and a university use resources. We sponsor activities that promote awareness of sustainable issues and take part in competitions such as the EPA Gameday Challenge and RecycleMania to demonstrate how UNL can make a difference. We partner with other organizations such as Ecology Now! and UNL Landscape Services to help Lincoln go green.
There were many people making the pledge to recycle on Friday, and during the next eight weeks we will be in front of the Union every Tuesday promoting RecycleMania so there is still plenty of time for you to take the pledge. All you need to do to take part in this competition is to recycle, but if you would like to do more or if you would like to learn more about Sustain UNL please e-mail us at sustainunl@gmail.com.
