In April 2019, Food Fort was selected to receive a $2,500 Strive to Thrive Lincoln grant. Food Fort serves fresh and healthy food for children in under-resourced neighborhoods. They used the grant to purchase a new cooling system for the Giving Garden.
The Giving Garden is a refrigerated, enclosed trailer that sets up in neighborhoods and distributes not just free produce and farm fresh eggs, but recipe cards that help people learn how to prepare and consume the fresh food. For some residents of these neighborhoods, produce can be too costly to purchase, so the Giving Garden allows them easy, convenient access to healthy food.
Food Fort is leaving a lasting impact on the lives of Lincoln kids. They have plans to continue to expand as resources are available. They look forward very much to the possibility of additional kids they could continue to serve and build relationships with. Around 180 kids benefit each week from this nonprofit's efforts already. They are always looking for donations, volunteers and support. You can reach them through their website http://www.lincolnfoodfort.com or call Michaela Akridge at 402-540-4445.
