The Fall 2024 Strive to Thrive Lincoln class researched 12 local organizations working to alleviate homelessness in the Lincoln community. Each organization was considered for a grant as part of the class’s philanthropic efforts.
Students conducted Zoom interviews and site visits with the following organizations:
- Bridges to Hope
- Catholic Social Services
- CEDARS
- CenterPointe
- Community Action Partnership of Lancaster and Saunders Counties
- Family Service Lincoln
- Fresh Start
- Friendship Home
- Lutheran Family Services
- Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach
- People's City Mission
- Nebraska Lawyers Foundation--VLP Tenant Assistance Project
As a class, students also participated in a service project at Project Connect Lincoln, held at Pinnacle Bank Arena. This event provided a hands-on opportunity to assist individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. Students helped guests navigate services and offered support wherever needed, gaining firsthand insight into the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.
Key takeaways from the semester included the power of collaboration, the importance of thoroughly evaluating community needs, and the significant impact even small grants can make in supporting nonprofit work. The experience also underscored the value of empathy, leadership, and active engagement in addressing social issues.
