Community is the foundation of life, and a strong community is built on its commitment to families and children. Since its founding in 1990, the Lincoln-based nonprofit Northeast Family Center (NFC) has upheld that commitment by providing family support services, before- and after-school care, and early childhood education tailored to the evolving needs of the Northeast Lincoln community.
For more than 30 years, NFC has focused on creating equitable educational opportunities for children from 6 weeks to 12 years old. Guided by the mission to “educate youth, engage families, and empower Northeast Lincoln,” NFC partners with Title I schools like Brownell and Norwood Park Elementary to deliver programs that promote learning, creativity and resilience in underserved communities.
Among its offerings is The Creative Curriculum for Early Learners, a research-based approach that supports development in academic, social-emotional, and physical domains. NFC’s after-school programs provide homework help, athletics such as basketball and volleyball leagues, and enrichment clubs in science, photography and STEM — all designed to make learning engaging beyond school hours.
Like many nonprofits, NFC faces challenges. Rising costs for labor and materials, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, have made it increasingly difficult to keep program fees affordable for all families. As the organization prepares to move into a new facility, it is seeking support to furnish classrooms and purchase the educational supplies needed to maintain its high-quality care.
Thanks to a $5,000 grant from Strive to Thrive Lincoln, made possible by donor Rhonda Seacrest, NFC is one step closer to expanding its reach. The funds will support key needs, including curriculum materials, classroom furniture, and staff salaries, helping ensure NFC remains a vital resource for families in Northeast Lincoln.
During site visits and conversations with NFC staff, students saw the team’s passion and commitment firsthand. The organization is guided by core values of Inspiration, Achievement, Respect and Excellence, represented by the acronym ICARE. NFC staff are not only educators, but also leaders, mentors and advocates for the success of every child and family they serve.
Through its work, NFC builds children’s confidence, strengthens family stability and brings the community together. Strive to Thrive Lincoln is proud to recognize and support the Northeast Family Center and looks forward to its continued growth and impact in Lincoln.
