Bridges to Hope is a Lincoln-based nonprofit organization that supports individuals recently released from incarceration by providing clothing, household items, and soon, transitional housing.

The organization plans to use its Strive to Thrive Lincoln grant to support the development of Hope Village, a community of 18 tiny homes, each ranging from 300 to 500 square feet. What makes this initiative especially meaningful is the involvement of individuals who are currently incarcerated in building the homes.

Construction will begin at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution, where incarcerated individuals will help assemble the tiny homes. Once transported to the Lincoln site, people on work release will finish the builds. The project not only equips participants with valuable construction skills but also fosters a deep sense of ownership and purpose as they help create a supportive space for peers reentering society.

Although Hope Village is designed for the recently incarcerated, it will also serve others in need of housing, offering residents a chance to reconnect with their communities and start anew.

“Bridges to Hope is a nonprofit organization committed to assisting individuals transition from incarceration to independence,” said Executive Director Rhonda Mattingly. “Our mission is to provide essential resources and support, giving people the tools they need to rebuild their lives and thrive.”

In addition to grant and donor support, Bridges to Hope operates Bud’s Thrift Shop at its O Street location in Lincoln. The shop sells gently used clothing, furniture, and household items at affordable prices, with proceeds helping sustain the organization’s mission.

Reflecting on her experience with Strive to Thrive Lincoln, Mattingly shared her appreciation: “I am deeply moved and profoundly grateful for all the hard work and dedication the students put into advocating for Bridges to Hope as a worthy cause. Your efforts remind me that there are so many compassionate individuals willing to extend a hand and offer a fresh start to those with previous records. Your belief in our mission not only uplifts us but also affirms that we are not alone in this journey to rebuild lives and restore hope. Thank you for being such a powerful voice for change and for inspiring us to continue making a difference.”
