If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the challenge of holding high standards and motivating students in a world where AI shortcuts are increasingly commonplace, you’re not alone. A recent survey from the American Association of Colleges and Universities found some alarming national statistics about Generative AI:

  • 90% of faculty are fearful that GenAI will diminish critical thinking skills.
  • 95% believe students will become over-reliant on GenAI tools.
  • 86% expect that GenAI will have a significant impact on those teaching in higher education.
  • 68% feel that their university is not effectively preparing them to teach students about GenAI.

Despite only being around for a few short years, AI tools like ChatGPT are already having a significant impact on teaching and learning. The AI landscape is also evolving rapidly. In November 2022, when ChatGPT initially became available, it wasn’t connected to the internet and was limited to text input. Today, there are hundreds of different AI tools available that are able to complete a complex array of tasks.

Many instructors on campus are feeling overwhelmed at the task of knowing that course updates are likely necessary but not knowing what to do about it. To help create community around this topic and provide a space for collective problem solving, the Center for Transformative Teaching is launching a learning community called AI-Resistant Pedagogy: Creating Conditions for Students to Use Their Own Brains. In this group, they will share the strategies that are useful, identify challenges in need of solution, and engage with scholarly literature to help find answers.

Instructors interested in participating should share their contact information and availability so planning can begin.
