UNL is seeking proposals for a mixed-use development to enhance a campus parking structure planned for a site at 18th and R streets. The request seeks proposals that include residential and possible retail or commercial use to create development complementary to the campus.
Proposals are due from private developers July 31, with the facility needing to be completed Aug. 1, 2014.
"We envision a development with UNL parking on the bottom and private rental residences on top," said Christine Jackson, vice chancellor for Business and Finance. "We believe there is a market for private housing near campus that would help fund UNL programs. It's beneficial to consider how the private-public use of that site can benefit the entire community."
Jackson said this proposal would be unique on campus, with dedicated university parking, private residences and commercial space. Maximum height of the building would be 130 feet; the university requires 1,250 parking spaces for student, faculty and staff use.
The developer also will be responsible for assessing the appropriate housing market for the building. The residences, under the proposal, will not be university-approved student housing.
Developers can examine the RFP at http://procurement.unl.edu/bid-opportunities. If an acceptable proposal is received, it would go to the Board of Regents for approval at the September board meeting. The program statement for the parking garage has already been approved.
Jackson directed questions to the website or to UNL Procurement Services at 402-472-2126.
