Windows 10 is not currently supported at UNL.

Information Technology Services has evaluated applications utilized by faculty and staff and have identified a number of compatibility/operational issues with Windows 10. In addition, Central Administration has issued a statement that the SAP GUI for Windows will not be supported with Windows 10 until further testing has taken place and an updated SAP GUI version is issued. Due to these compatibility issues, faculty and staff are urged not to upgrade or acquire Windows 10 at this time for machines that operate in the UNL production environment. Windows 10 KMS Environment

While Windows 10 is not currently supported, we are laying the groundwork for future implementation. Beginning on August 6, ITS will be modifying the campus Windows and Office KMS (Key Management Service) environment to include support for Windows 10. This service allows for automatic activation of both Windows and Office for computers located on our network. This change will include bringing up a new server to host these automatic activation services as our current server will not support Windows 10 activation. These changes will not affect any computers utilizing MAKs (Multiple Activation Keys). These changes will also not affect Office 2011 or Office 2016 for Mac.

Depending on how you are activating Windows and Office via KMS today, some changes for future installations of Windows and Office may be needed. These changes are outlined below:

Scenario 1: Fully automated activation by DNS (SCCM)
If you are imaging Windows systems or installing Office through SCCM, you should be already using the DNS activation method. No further steps should be needed as computers will automatically change over to the new server. All future deployments will automatically utilize the new server.

Scenario 2: Fully automated activation by DNS (Non-SCCM)
If you are imaging Windows systems or installing Office manually or through another automated method and are not using any form of scripting to activate Windows or Office (e.g. letting Windows or Office activate on their own), you should be already using the DNS activation method. No further steps should be needed as computers will automatically change over to the new server. All future deployments will automatically utilize the new server.

Scenario 3: Automated activation by script
If you are imaging Windows systems or installing Office manually or through another automated method and are utilizing an activation script, please note the following:

A. The software.unl.edu KMS server being used in your script will continue to function through at least December 2015. No immediate action is required to migrate computers that are already being pointed to this server. ITS will be able to assist any departments utilizing activation scripts to help develop migration plans if needed.

B. The new server will be called its-kms.unl.edu. If script based KMS activation is required for your deployments, please start switching your scripts to this new server as it will support all versions of Windows and Office.
