ITS will begin to remove wireless registrations for devices belonging to former students with credentials that have been inactive for two semesters.

Students returning to campus this fall will no longer need to re-register wireless devices on the UNL network, while former student devices will be purged from the registration system, beginning August 11. ITS will begin to remove wireless registrations for devices belonging to former students with credentials that have been inactive for two terms. The process will remove 4800 registrations over a two-week period, with another 2000 expected after the start of the fall term. The purge will have no system impact on users registering new wireless devices.

"We're following a security best practice without inconveniencing the returning student," says Jay Wilmes, ITS network wireless engineer. "Its not a system-widepurge--it's only removing wireless access for devices for those who are no longer students."

The registration removals will be performed in small groupings over a two week period to ensure that wireless authentication systems are not negatively impacted. Results of the process will be analyzed by ITS to determine if a similar process would be extended in the future to registrations of faculty and staff who have separated from the university.
