Mac users at UNL have experienced a growing trend first-hand—viruses or malware on their Macs. Numerous reports in the media indicate a sharp increase in malware and viruses aimed at Apple operating systems. The UNL Computer Help Center has observed this growing trend with Macs on campus brought in for service and troubleshooting.

“I think many people who bring their Macs into the Help Center are often surprised that they have a virus or malware,” says Eric Haffey, ITS client services coordinator. “Macs were seen as immune to viruses for so long, but now that there is greater population of Apple users, the number of Mac-related malware has exploded.

According to a report from security vendor r Bit9 + Carbon Black, five times more OS X malware appeared in 2015 than the previous five years combined. Between June and August, 2015, over 1400 unique OS X malware samples were analyzed by the firm.
