Environmental Sustainability of Small Wastewater

Improving the environmental performance of small water resource recovery facilities can represent a meaningful contribution to global sustainability goals. These small systems account for the majority of centralized wastewater treatment facilities and exhibit emission intensive profiles. Case study research on existing pathways to improve their sustainability is needed to help inform decision making on where to focus efforts in reducing environmental emissions. To help fill this gap, this research explores the environmental life cycle impact of different sustainability measures that have been implemented at many small systems throughout the state of Nebraska. This includes potential impacts of choices made in technology selection, design sizing, agriculture water reuse, utilizing on-site solar energy, energy efficiency measures, and end-of-life scenarios.
