Title: EXPLORING VARIABLY SATURATED FLOW FORMULATIONS FOR MODFLOW: IMPLEMENTING A FULLY 3D RICHARDS' EQUATION IN MODFLOW 6
Abstract: The UZR package, a unique addition to MODFLOW 6, is developed in this thesis to overcome the shortcomings of the UZF package's conventional unsaturated zone flow modeling techniques by implementing a completely 3D solution to Richards' Equation. UZR enhances MODFLOW 6's capability to simulate variably saturated flow in complex subsurface environments by integrating capillary effects, pressure head gradients, and detailed moisture retention. Benchmarking against HYDRUS, MODFLOW VSF, and USG-T demonstrates UZR’s accuracy and computational efficiency, even under challenging scenarios such as perched aquifers and transient recharge events. This research bridges critical gaps in groundwater modeling, providing a powerful tool for hydrogeologists, environmental engineers, and researchers to advance the study of unsaturated flow dynamics.
