Panel discussion with Drs. Cynthia Gooch-Grayon and Jeannette Jones.
Did you know that the 22 Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated participates in the 1913 Suffrage Parade just two months after the sorority's founding on January 13, 1913. Mary Church Terrell (a major character in SUFFS) was one of two of the first Honorary Members of the sorority. She played a pivotal role in helping the 22 collegiate women found a new sorority based on social action and participating in the parade. Founder Florence Letcher Toms noted: "We marched that day in order that women might come into their own, because we believed that women not only needed an education, but they needed a broader horizon in which they may use that education. And the right to vote would give them that privilege."
Come learn more about the often-forgotten history of African American women in the Women's Suffrage Movement. Featuring SUFFS understudies for Ida B. Wells, Mary Church Terrell, and Phyllis Terrell. We were there!
