Dean Candidate Bardet at Public Presentation Today
Jean-Pierre Bardet, a candidate for dean of the College of Engineering, is one of five selected by the search committee for campus visits Feb. 20-March 9. Bardet will give a public presentation 3:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at Walter Scott Engineering Center room 237.
Currently professor and chair of the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Veterbi School of Engineering at University of Southern California (since 2006), he also is director (since 2009) of the USC Center on Megacities. Originally educated in France, Bardet received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. His research interests are in civil infrastructure systems, geomechanics; geotechnical engineering; and earthquake engineering. more...

Pulitzer Prize Winner to Give Multimedia Presentation
Sports Illustrated photographer and Pulitzer Prize winner Bill Frakes will give a multimedia presentation 7 p.m., Feb. 24 at the Sheldon Museum of Art. A reception is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the museum. Both events are free and open to the public.
Frakes is holding a two-day workshop in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, Feb. 22-23. The workshop is designed to teach students how to tell stories with multimedia. more...
NET Radio Hosts Discussion on Illegal Immigration
Nebraska lawmakers may soon consider LB48, a bill styled after the Arizona legislation that requires law enforcement officers to check the immigration status of people they stop, if the officer has reason to believe that they are in the country illegally.
The proposed legislation is generating controversy, and NET Radio will give listeners the opportunity to voice their opinions during the hour-long, live call-in program "Nebraska's Talking: Illegal Immigration," airing Thursday, Feb. 24, at 6:30 p.m. CT.more...

UPC Event Features Storm Chaser Timmer
One of the most successful extreme storm chasers in the world, the Discovery Channel's Reed Timmer, will appear at UNL Feb. 24. Timmer will speak in the Nebraska Union Auditorium, 14th and R streets, at 7:30 p.m. This event is free for UNL students with a valid NCard, $5 for all others.
Timmer has "hands-on" experience with a vast assortment of hazardous weather conditions and natural disasters. His extensive educational background in meteorology has made him one of the world's most respected experts in extreme weather forecasting, safety and survival. As a star on Discovery Channel's "Storm Chasers," he became the first person in history to record a high-definition video inside a tornado. This eight-episode series had a record 19 million viewers and is one of Discovery Channel's highest rated shows of all time. The Dominator, Timmer's custom-made, tornado-chasing vehicle, will also be on display on the Nebraska Union Plaza 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 24. more...

Highway Paleontologist Will Present Fossil Program
State Museum Highway Paleontologist Shane Tucker will present "Nebraska's Highway Paleontology Program: Road to Destruction or Path to Preservation?" at 5:30 p.m., Feb. 24 in Morrill Hall. Tucker will highlight the spectacular discoveries unearthed through the program over the past 50 years.
From a 40-foot-long sea lizard that swam in the ocean covering Nebraska during the Age of Dinosaurs to a 23- million-year-old sling-shot horned deer that lived in the state's Panhandle, the program has salvaged more than 200,000 irreplaceable scientific treasures that would have otherwise been paved over. Salem Baptist Church's 'Voices of Victory' to Perform
The Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services (OASIS) presents the Salem Baptist Church Gospel Choir, "Voices of Victory" at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 24 in the Nebraska Union Ballroom. This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 7 p.m.
"Voices of Victory" is the signature choir of the Salem Baptist Church in Omaha. The choir produces a rich musical sound that should not be missed. The performance is presented in honor of Black History Month.
Barney's Version; Biutiful Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Barney's Version and Biutiful. Both films will screen through Mar. 3.
