Humanities Grants Celebration Today
A celebration for three grants totaling nearly $1.5 million is scheduled for 10 a.m., today at the Van Brunt Visitors Center. The event will be led by Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Prem Paul, vice chancellor for research and economic development.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awards will fund projects in the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities, UNL Libraries and University of Nebraska Press. The projects are designed to enhance digital research and education at UNL and expand the NU Press' offerings. The grant celebration is free and open to faculty, staff and students. more...
Weissinger is New Senior Vice Chancellor
Following a national search, Ellen Weissinger, interim senior vice chancellor for academic affairs, has been selected by Chancellor Harvey Perlman to take over that position permanently on March 15. The action is pending approval by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.
Weissinger, formerly dean of Graduate Studies, was appointed interim vice chancellor Dec. 21, 2009, by Perlman. She held numerous administrative positions at UNL before being appointed dean of Graduate Studies Jan. 18, 2008. She was the associate director of the Buros Institute for Mental Measurements (1992-94), associate dean of Teachers College (1995-99) and executive associate dean of Graduate Studies (2002-08). more...

Opera Program Prepares for Classic 'Romeo and Juliet'
The UNL opera program presents "Romeo and Juliet," Feb. 25 and 27 in Kimball Recital Hall. Performances are 7:30 p.m., Feb. 25 and 3 p.m., Feb. 27.
Shakespeare's classic love story is brought to life by compositions written by Charles Gounod. While many operatic composers have tried their hand at adapting "Romeo and Juliet," Gounod's rendition has enjoyed the most popular success. more...
Student is Finalist in Big Ten Contest
Sophomore broadcasting and advertising major Ryan Mueksch is one of ten finalists nationwide for the "Gus Johnson Moment" contest on The Big Ten Network. The top three contestants with the most votes by 11 p.m., Feb. 27 will be flown out to Indianapolis March 10-13 for the Big Ten Tournament. Individuals can vote once a day at the Big Ten Network website.

Jazz luminaries Marsalis, Blanchard to play the Lied Feb. 25
Jazz luminaries Terence Blanchard and Branford Marsalis are teaming up for a 7:30 p.m., Feb. 25 performance at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. The concert will include compositions ranging from jazz classics to original pieces.
The evening performance at the Lied Center will consist of two acts, each featuring Marsalis or Blanchard and their respective bands. Each musician will also be a guest soloist on various numbers in the other's set. Tickets are $46/$39 for adults and $23/$19.50 for students and youth age 18 and younger and are available on the Lied Center website. more...
Nebraska Nova, Woodbury Corp. to Guide Innovation Campus Development
In a significant step forward today for Nebraska Innovation Campus, the NIC Development Corp. board of directors signed an agreement with Nebraska Nova Development LLC to carry out the first phase of development at Nebraska Innovation Campus.
Nebraska Nova's managing partner is Woodbury Corp., a Utah-based development firm. Nebraska Nova initially will develop infrastructure at Innovation Campus such as roads and sewers to allow for construction of other facilities planned in Phase I, including a life sciences research center, a public-private office and laboratory building, a renovated 4-H building and a U.S. Department of Agriculture research facility. Renovation of the 4-H building into a central commons area likely will be the first building project. more...

University Theatre Offers Modern Twist on 'Iphigenia'
University Theatre opens its spring season with "Iphigenia 2.0," a play based on Euripides' "Iphigenia in Aulis." Show times are 7:30 p.m., Feb. 25-26 and March 2-5 in the Temple Building's Howell Theatre. University Theatre is the academic production program in UNL's Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film.
By playwright Charles L. Mee, "Iphigenia 2.0" is set in modern times. Iphigenia is a beautiful heiress from the House of Atreus and is about to be married. However, she must deal with an overbearing mother, Clytemnestra, and a father, Agamemnon, who plans to kill her. more...
