Blackboard upgrade to create May 11 outage

The MyUNL academic portal will receive an upgrade of its Blackboard system from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 11. All access to Blackboard will be unavailable during the upgrade. The outage includes no access to UNL's online grade center.

The upgrade includes a simplified user interface, as well as new features like test item analysis, more robust text editing and an improved discussion board. An additional new feature is a "Video Anywhere" button that allows instructors to turn on a webcam to record and embed announcements in courses. Popular existing features have also been retained in the upgrade.

All existing content in Blackboard will be retained, including any new summer or fall courses that faculty have started to build.

"The May 11 date follows the close of the grade submission deadline," said Jeremy Van Hof, teaching and learning tech service manager for Information Services. "It also gives faculty some time to acclimate to the new features over the summer session."
