Lincoln, Neb., January 14th, 2004 —

Lincoln, Neb., Jan. 14, 2004 -- The University of Nebraska College of Law has received a $100,000 grant from the Law School Admission Council (the entity that administers the Law School Admission Test) to offer its second Summer 2004 Pre-Law Institute.

This program is designed for promising undergraduate students interested in the law and is targeted especially to students who will contribute to the diversity of the legal profession. The institute will prepare students for both law school and the application process; expose them to a broad cross-section of the legal community; inform them about the breadth and power of the law and a legal career; and establish individualized mentoring relationships.

The Institute will be held from June 14 to July 9. Most selected participants will be starting their junior year of college in the fall of 2004. Some participants may be starting their sophomore or senior year in college or may be entering law school in the fall of 2004. The NU College of Law is especially interested in attracting a diverse group of students to the institute, including racial, geographical and socio-economic diversity.

With the assistance of a grant from the Law School Admission Council, the NU College of Law first conducted a similar summer program last July. The Law College was one of eight schools from across the country selected by the Law School Admission Council for this experimental program. A special feature of the Nebraska program was the strong support received from virtually every segment of the legal community in the state, including federal and state court judges, academics and practitioners. After reviewing NU's 2003 program, the Law School Admission Council renewed the college's grant for another four years at $100,000 per year, bringing the total grant amount to $500,000.
