Feb. 19 Seminar to Take Insider's View of Opera Production

Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 12, 2004 -- The University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Music will present "Anatomy of an Opera: The Elixir of Love" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in Kimball Recital Hall, 11th and R streets.

An insider's view of the production of "The Elixir of Love," the seminar is presented by UNL Opera in conjunction with Lincoln City Libraries and Friends of Opera.

William Shomos, director of UNL Opera, will moderate the seminar, which will permit audience members to see how an opera is produced from set design to the final rehearsals. The panel will discuss the opera "The Elixir of Love" by Gaetano Donizetti, production aspects of staging an opera such as set design, lighting, technical considerations, and preparation of the cast for the opera.

Panelists will include Ariel Bybee, production director for "The Elixir of Love;" Carolyn Dow, music librarian at the Polley Music Library at Lincoln City Libraries; Donna Himmelberger, hair and makeup designer; Ron Koinzan, technical director; Art Kuhr, property master; Jeanne Marlette, costume designer; Laurel Shoemaker, scenery and lighting designer; and Angela Turner, stage manager. Audience members will hear the panelists describe the work of creating a production, and be involved in a portion of an actual rehearsal.

This event is free and open to the public. The seminar was originally scheduled for Feb. 5, but was postponed because of weather.
