Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 23, 2004 -- The University of Nebraska has entered the contract negotiation phase with The Weitz Co., an Omaha design and construction firm, in the initial step involved in the North Stadium expansion project.

"Our selection committee interviewed four exceptional firms, and after making a difficult decision, we are now entering the negotiation phase of the project with The Weitz Co. to complete designs for and build the North Stadium expansion on the UNL campus," said Rebecca Koller, assistant vice president and director of facilities planning and management at the University of Nebraska.

The original timeline called for completion of the expanded seating area in the North Stadium by fall 2005. However, the complexities of the project called for more time in completing the selection process than originally allotted. The total project is now slated for completion by August 2006. The cost of both design and construction will come in under a budgeted amount of $40.8 million, according to Koller.

"We are excited to be involved in this significant project for the university and the state, and feel confident in our ability to find creative solutions to meet all programmatic and building needs for this project," said Weitz President Radd Way.

Final designs for the project will be made available in the next few months, following the completion of the negotiation phase with The Weitz Co.

"We are very excited to take another step in the process of building the finest facility of its kind in college athletics," said Steve Pederson, UNL athletic director. "The design team that the university has chosen will be charged with developing a design that will focus on the needs of our fans and student athletes first. This is another step in the vision of a continuation of the greatest athletic tradition in the country."
