'Directing Shakespeare' Topic of March 10 Knoll Lecture

Lincoln, Neb., March 2, 2004 -- The Robert Knoll Lecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on March 10 will provide a first-hand account of the difficulties and pleasures of staging Shakespeare for modern audiences.

Mary Zimmerman, professor of performance studies at Northwestern University, will describe the process in "Directing Shakespeare," beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Great Plains Art Collection, 1155 Q St. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Author of several plays including "Metamorphoses," "The Odyssey" and "The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci," Zimmerman has also directed her own and other plays, including "Henry VIII" for the New York Shakespeare Festival. She is a 1998 recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and has received many awards, including a Tony Award for "Metamorphoses." A Lincoln native, Zimmerman will also be a visiting artist in the UNL Department of Theatre Arts.
