Lincoln, Neb., April 2nd, 2004 — Sarah Hermsmeier of Jansen and Camilo Ramirez of Lincoln have received the 2004 Outstanding Student Leader awards from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The awards are presented each year to two UNL juniors, one male and one female, and recognize outstanding leadership in academic, co-curricular and extracurricular activities. The winners must have successfully completed at least 67 hours of coursework and demonstrated notable contributions toward the development of leadership qualities in their fellow students.

Outstanding Student Leader awards provide full resident tuition and fees for the students' senior years.

The UNL Chapter of the American Cancer Society was also honored with the Campus Life Impact Award from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The first Relay for Life took place in 2001. Since then, it has grown to be one of the largest and most popular annual philanthropy events on campus. More than 70 teams participate annually, and they have raised more than $90,000 for cancer research. This is an all-inclusive event that draws participants from all areas of campus life.

There were 18 semifinalists and six finalists for the Outstanding Student Leader awards; a list of those students follows alphabetically by hometown. The four finalists other than Hermsmeier and Ramirez each receive $500 book scholarships to be used during their senior years.
