The Alpha of Nebraska chapter of Phi Beta Kappa initiated 43 new members April 28 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Richard Hoffmann, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, was initiated at the ceremony as an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa.
"As dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for more than three years, Richard Hoffmann has been an articulate, forceful and effective advocate for the importance of the liberal arts as the curricular core of the college, and more broadly, the centrality of the College of Arts and Sciences to the mission of the university," said Robert Gorman, president of the Alpha of Nebraska chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and lecturer in classics and religious studies at UNL.
Phi Beta Kappa is one of the nation's oldest academic honorary societies. New members must have fulfilled or be in the process of completing the requirements in the liberal arts for a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree. Membership selection is based on grade point average and additional requirements by the university.
Membership in the Alpha of Nebraska chapter is limited to the top 5 to 10 percent of students who have completed at least 64 hours at UNL. Memberships are awarded in the fall and spring semesters.
Following is a list of students who were inducted. All are scheduled to receive degrees at UNL's May 8 commencement exercises, unless otherwise noted. Along with each student's name and hometown are the academic majors and minors and parents' names.
