Sigma Xi Announces Research Poster Winners

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln chapter of Sigma Xi, the research honorary society, has announced the winners of its 2004 Graduate Student Research Poster Competition.
In the area of biological and agricultural sciences, the winners were Maricelis Acevedo (biological sciences), Arlene Adviento-Borbe (agronomy), and Lisa Franzen (entomology). In the area of computer science, engineering, mathematics, and statistics, the winners were Andrew Harken (mechanical engineering), Ellen Day (mechanical engineering), and Nageswara Rao Tadepalli (electrical engineering). In the area of physical and material sciences, the winners were Shampa Aich (mechanical engineering), Anthony Caruso (physics and astronomy), and Jihee Kim (physics and astronomy). In the area of social sciences the winner was Shen Zhang (psychology). The designer of each winning poster received a cash award of $50 and the winning graduate students were honored at Sigma Xi's annual awards and initiation banquet on April 27.
The competition was sponsored jointly by Sigma Xi and the office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies. This year's competition, held April 21 in the Nebraska Union as part of the 2004 Research Fair, drew a record 91 poster submissions.
This year's competition was organized by Kent Eskridge, past president of the UNL chapter of Sigma Xi. Judges were Stephanie Adams (graduate studies), Jennifer Brand (chemical engineering), Berthe Choueiry (computer science and engineering), Tom Clemente (agronomy and horticulture), Peter Dowben (physics and astronomy), Ray Hames (anthropology and geography), Dan Leger (psychology), Anne Parkhurst (statistics), Jeff Shield (mechanical engineering) and Blair Siegfried (entomology).
Sigma Xi is an international research society whose programs and activities promote the health of the scientific enterprise and honor scientific achievement. The University of Nebraska chapter was organized in 1897. For further information on the UNL Chapter, see its Web page.
