Lincoln, Neb., June 4th, 2004 —

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering and Technology will host the 2004 Nebraska MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) Summer on Campus, June 6-11. The MESA program encourages students of color to take advantage of the rewarding opportunities in technology-related fields through a variety of activities and educational resources.

The summer program, held annually in June, is open to underrepresented students in Nebraska who demonstrate an interest in science and math. The program is comprised of two one-week sessions -- one for students completing the eighth grade and another for students in grades 9-11. All participants reside in Neihardt Residence Hall on the UNL City Campus for the duration of the program. Students spend the week learning about how math and science translate to the real world with industry tours, a meeting with a representative from UNL Admissions, workshops and a family picnic. The experience culminates with an awards ceremony. The program is free because of financial support from the university and private industry.

During the academic year, MESA offers ACT preparation classes for juniors and seniors, campus visits, a reunion for juniors and seniors with graduates of the program, a math-science activity for freshmen and sophomores, a college application night, and a visit to the College of Engineering and Technology.
