Lincoln, Neb., June 7th, 2004 —

Lincoln, Neb., June 7, 2004 -- The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will be closed and classes cancelled June 11, following a directive by Nebraska Gov. Mike Johanns.

President George W. Bush has declared the day a national day of mourning for former President Ronald Reagan, meaning the federal government will be closed. Johanns subsequently announced the Friday closure of Nebraska state government agencies, including the university.

UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman, in a note today to faculty, staff and students, said this may cause some difficulty in rescheduling classes and events, and suggested that people with questions about university activities call ahead to get confirmation on events or to find alternate scheduling. The main university switchboard number is (402) 472-7211. Students enrolled in summer classes are asked to check with their instructor for make-up assignments. New Student Enrollment activities will continue as planned, and parents and new students already scheduled to participate in NSE Friday should carry on as originally planned.

Also, the recognition reception to honor UNL volunteers who helped with tornado cleanup has been rescheduled for 8-9 a.m. June 22 in the Champions Club.
