Twenty-eight students from high schools in Nebraska and 10 other states participated in the eighth annual Mathematics Summer Camp for High School Girls July 18-24 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The camp is designed to provide a stimulating and supportive environment for girls to develop their mathematical abilities and interests. Participants took a weeklong course about the exciting mathematics of codes as well as minicourses on bioinformatics, aerodynamics and knots.
The students worked with women mathematics professors and graduate students and interacted with peers who share an interest in mathematics. They stayed in a UNL residence hall and were chaperoned by a female mathematics graduate student.
The All Girls/All Math Program at UNL is one of 10 Young Scholars Programs across the nation, which are supported by the American Mathematical Society. It was listed as an Editor's Choice for Best Value among summer college programs for high school students in the resource guide "Early College Programs" (online at www.earlycollege.com).
