Lincoln, Neb., August 6th, 2004 —

An endowment of approximately $5 million from University of Nebraska alumnus Harold Lieding will be established as part of an agreement between the University of Nebraska Board of Regents and the Lieding estate.

Harold Lieding, a 1962 graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Arts and Sciences, died Nov. 13, 2003, and left the funds to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in his will. Lieding designated that an endowment in his memory would be named in honor of Lieding's deceased son, Christian Wilhelm Lieding.

"We are grateful to Harold Lieding and to his family for his generosity in supporting our institution," said UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman.

Lieding was a resident of Vienna, Va., after being born and raised at Norfolk, according to information from alumni records. He earned his J.D. from George Washington University. Lieding was a former chairman of the board of Heritage Bancorp, which was acquired by Cardinal Bank in 2000. He had served on the board of directors for Cardinal up until his death.

The Board of Regents' approval is necessary because the bequest was directed to the university rather than the University of Nebraska Foundation, the nonprofit corporation designated to accept, invest and manage all funds from private sources on behalf of the university. The agreement is on the regents' Aug. 7 agenda as a report.
