Because of ongoing work on the Antelope Valley Project and other construction projects, University of Nebraska-Lincoln officials warn motorists it may be wise to steer clear of campus during the week of Aug. 15 as students move into their residence halls in preparation for the Aug. 23 start of classes.
Motorists traveling through campus will find narrowed driving lanes on 16th, 17th and Vine streets. Students and parents should plan for delays as parking near many residence halls is limited. Owen Yardley, director of UNL Police, suggests that general motorists use Ninth, 10th and 27th streets to avoid the campus residential areas during the Aug. 15-22 move-in period.
University Housing has taken steps to ease congestion by scheduling staggered move-in times.
Following are details on traffic changes:
Aug. 12-14 -- Early move-in for approved students. Parking meters hooded for one-hour loading zones along S Street in vicinity of Selleck Residence Hall. Some Nebraska Union parking will become a loading zone.
Aug. 15-18 -- New Husker Courtyards apartment-style hall opens for the first time. 17th Street: one northbound lane closed for unloading zone in front of Cather and Pound halls and Husker Courtyards. Parking lots adjacent to Husker Courtyards and across from Pound Hall will be designated for unloading zones. Vine Street between 16th and 17th streets: one eastbound lane blocked for unloading zone. 16th Street: one southbound lane in front of Neihardt Hall closed for unloading zone.
Aug. 19-20 -- All halls open for students. In addition to above closures, an additional lane will be closed on 17th Street near Abel Hall. Abel-Sandoz parking will be designated loading zones. Parking north and west of Harper/Schramm/Smith will be designated loading zone.
Aug. 21-22 -- 16th and 17th street lane closures remain in force.
Ongoing closures -- Avery Avenue closed for stadium construction. 15th Street near Selleck Hall closed for construction of Selleck Dining Services.
