WHERE: UNL College of Engineering & Technology, Lincoln and Omaha campuses
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering and Technology and the student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers will host Women Interested in Engineering Day on Oct. 11. The one-day conference was established in 1998 to educate young women in grades 9-12 who are interested in math and science. The program encourages young women to reach their full potential and become the future of engineering.
This year's conference will include presentations on the engineering opportunities available from the college on both the Lincoln and Omaha campuses. Hands-on activities will be taught by UNL faculty and students as a way to introduce young women to the various engineering disciplines. During a campuswide scavenger hunt, students will receive a tour of UNL and Nebraska engineering facilities, including state-of-the-art Othmer Hall. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend an introductory engineering class with a current student.
Parents are invited to join the conference for a formal dinner and presentation panel hosted by current students, alumni, faculty and professional engineers.
Last year, approximately 40 young women participated in the event. Women interested in engineering are encouraged to attend the conference more than once, and the events are changed each year to keep participants returning.
A full schedule of events and registration information is available online. The cost for this event is $10 per student and includes dinner and parking.
