Patrick Smith of Brunswick, Md., who received a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Dec. 18, has been named the first Edward Trayes Scholar through the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund's news copy-editing internship program.
The $1,000 scholarship is named for Edward Trayes, a journalism professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, who has directed the Center for Editing Excellence at Temple for the Newspaper Fund since 1968. The scholarship is the first of 10 annual awards made possible by a contribution from the O'Toole Family Foundation of Short Hills, N.J. Terence O'Toole, a former copy-editing intern at The Wall Street Journal, made the gift marking the 25th anniversary of his participation in the program. He is chief operating officer of the Principal Investment Area at Goldman Sachs in New York.
Smith spent 10 weeks as a copy editor at the New York Times News Service in New York City last summer after attending two weeks of training at Temple in May with Trayes and 13 other interns. Smith will begin work as a copy editor in January at the Des Moines (Iowa) Register.
"I'm just sort of in awe," Smith said. The news of the scholarship came from Trayes on the anniversary of his selection as a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund copy-editing intern.
Trayes said, "I have no doubt Patrick will be heard from in the future. He's off to a great start at the Des Moines Register." Trayes said he chose Smith for the award because he performed well at the residency in Philadelphia as well as at the Times News Service. The $1,000 scholarship is added to the similar amount Smith was awarded by the fund for succeeding at his internship.
