University of Nebraska-Lincoln student Ashley Robison Schneider has been awarded a $500 scholarship in the first national scholarship competition of Tau Sigma, the national honor society for transfer students.
Schneider is an animal science major with a 3.94 grade-point average. Her application described her involvement in Tau Sigma, national honor society for transfer students, and her service to UNL.
"Having a national scholarship winner demonstrates that our chapter is fulfilling its mission, which is to promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students," said JoAnn Moseman, Tau Sigma of Nebraska chapter adviser and transfer student coordinator at UNL.
Schneider, a Lincoln native, began her studies at Colorado State University. After changing her focus from pre-veterinary science to pre-medicine, she transferred to UNL, where she was a charter member of the Nebraska chapter of Tau Sigma and serves as its president.
Schneider detailed her volunteer efforts including assisting with Big Red Welcome and other recruiting events, but credited her biggest impact on the university to her involvement in creating and maintaining an electronic community for transfer students using Blackboard, the university's academic portal. This online resource links students to campus and community information and to discussion boards where current students like Schneider answer questions from newly enrolled students.
