Lincoln, Neb., January 14th, 2005 —

The Office of Graduate Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has honored 122 UNL graduate students who have received the Presidential, Othmer and Fling fellowships, the university's most prestigious graduate awards. Each student received a commemorative medallion inscribed with his or her name and the name of the fellowship.

The Presidential Graduate Fellowships Program was established in 1983 by then-President Ronald W. Roskens, and is the premier fellowship awarded through the office of Graduate Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Recipients are selected annually by the president of the NU system upon receipt of names of the successful candidates from individual campuses. The combined campuses receive a total of eight Presidential Fellowships annually, with UNL receiving four fellowships to award each year. This fellowship award provides a $16,500 stipend at UNL, as well as a tuition and fee waiver, which will allow them to work full time on their graduate studies in the last year of their degree program.

Othmer Fellowships are intended to assist in recruiting exceptional scholars who are seeking a terminal degree (i.e., Ph.D., Ed.D, D.M.A., M.F.A.). Othmer Fellows receive, in addition to a departmental assistantship, a $7,500 fellowship per year. The fellowships are renewable for up to three years, given continued excellent progress toward the degree.

The Maude Hammond Fling Fellowship is one of the top two fellowships awarded by the graduate fellowship committee at UNL, and is awarded to up to 10 students annually. To be eligible for this fellowship award, a student must be enrolled in a full-time course of study with the objective of a master's or doctoral degree and be near the end of the degree program. The award provides advanced, top-ranking graduate students with stipends, as well as a tuition and fee waivers that allow them to work full time on their graduate studies. The fellowships are open to all qualified students, and are funded by the University of Nebraska Foundation.
