Lincoln, Neb., February 23rd, 2005 —

The inaugural RED Gala, sponsored by the Nebraska Alumni Association, raised approximately $37,000 for the new RED Scholars Fund at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The Realizing Educational Dreams event, held at the Omaha Hilton Feb. 18, drew 330 participants for a formal dinner, live and silent auctions, awards presentation and dessert reception.

Awards were presented to four Omahans whose efforts have brought recognition and support to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Omaha World-Herald and John Gottschalk, president and publisher, received the Founders' Medallion. The Educational Achievement Award went to Ken Bird, superintendent of Westside Community Schools; and the Educational Service Award to Omaha businessman David Slattery. December UNL graduate Juanita Page, holder of two national championships from the American Forensics Association, was presented with the Undergraduate Achievement Award.

David Karnes served as honorary chair for the first in what is destined to become an annual event. At least 50 percent of the proceeds will fund university scholarships for Omaha-area high school students, with the rest earmarked for other high-achieving students.
