Lincoln, Neb., March 14th, 2005 —

Sixteen University of Nebraska-Lincoln students and three trip leaders passed up the beaches and the slopes to head to Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota for Alternative Spring Break.

Participants will complete nearly 420 hours of volunteer service while on the trip. Service activities include fire prevention and clean-up at Mount Rushmore and tutoring at Pine Ridge Public Schools on the Pine Ridge Reservation. A visit to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial are also included in the trip. The students left March 12 and will return to Lincoln March 16.

Alternative Spring Break is sponsored by Volunteer/Service-learning in UNL's Office of Student Involvement. Volunteer/Service-learning is an integration of experiential learning theory and practice with an emphasis on civic responsibility. Service-learning occurs by participants reflecting on their service, how they were affected by it, and how the service affected the population or agency served.
