The Czech Language Foundation will hold its fourth annual recognition banquet April 10 at the Cornhusker Hotel, 333 S. 13th St.
This year's theme centers on honoring the University of Nebraska-Lincoln students of the Czech language and the donors who provided scholarships for every student in all levels of Czech this spring. The program has more than 24 scholarships available at this time for the 2005 fall semester. The donors include individuals and organizations dedicated to the promotion of Czech culture and heritage. They will be joined by representatives of the U.S. embassy and government of the Czech Republic and UNL administrators. Students in the Czech language program will perform instrumental and vocal classical Czech music. A silent auction will be held.
For more information about this event, visit the foundation's Web site (www.unl.edu/CzechLanguageFoundation) or telephone Cathy Oslzly at (402) 472-3121 or (402) 781-9213. A traditional Czech dinner will be served. Sponsorships of parts of the event, including dignitary tables, are available. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person or tables of 10 can be reserved for $300 (a portion of the ticket price is tax-deductible). To order tickets, please send a check made out to the Czech Language Foundation by April 2 to: Czech Language Foundation, P.O. Box 5502, Lincoln, NE 68505-5502. Please include a list of those attending for the purpose of name tags and place cards.
The foundation enhances the learning experience of students by working through the Czech embassy to bring dignitaries to campus. This year, Eduard Metela, counselor-head of the embassy's administrative section, and Dr. Petr Pithart, past president of the Czech parliament, have been invited. The embassy's involvement allows students and the community close access to foreign dignitaries and a better understanding between nations. The foundation also promotes enrollment and involvement of the Czech community with the Scholarship Partnering Program. It is working to fund an endowed chair for Czech language instruction.
