Wally Peterson wins Doc Elliott Award

Wallace C. Peterson, retired economics professor, will receive the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Doc Elliott Award at the University Scholars Convocation April 17. The convocation begins at 4 p.m. in the Lied Center for Performing Arts, 301 N. 12th St.

Sponsored by the Nebraska Alumni Association, the Doc Elliott Award is presented annually to a retired faculty or staff member whose caring has made a difference in the lives of alumni and who has gone beyond traditional expectations at NU.

Peterson became an instructor in the Department of Economics at UNL in 1951 and was promoted to assistant professor in 1954, associate professor in 1957 and professor in 1962. From 1965-75, he was chair of the economics department and in 1966 was appointed the George Holmes professor of economics. He also participated in two yearlong Fulbright Fellowships to France and to Greece and served as president of the Academic Senate and chair of the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission. Peterson received the Outstanding Research and Creativity Activity Award from the university in 1981 and the Outstanding Teacher Scholar Award in 1987. He is the author of two major economics textbooks and five specialized economics books.

After retiring in 1991, Peterson collaborated with a former student on a new economics book, taught SAGE classes, and provided introductory flights in his Piper Club aircraft to youth in the Young Eagles Program. He also stays active in local political issues and remains well known for his foray into national politics in the 1970s, when he campaigned twice for a seat in the U.S. Senate.
