UNL to celebrate African Culture April 18-23

WHERE: Nebraska Union, 1400 R Street, and Nebraska East Union, northeast of 35th and Holdrege Streets

Lincoln, Neb., April 13th, 2005 —

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's African Student Association will host a variety of events in celebration of African Week, April 18-23, culminating with the Festival of African Culture.

A schedule of events follows:

April 18, 1-5 p.m. -- African display booth in Nebraska Union, 1400 R St., or display on Nebraska Union Memorial plaza (weather permitting), featuring artifacts, African garments, African flags, flyers, picture display, drum performance and recorded African music.

April 19, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. -- AIDS presentation in alcove near Burger King in Nebraska Union, featuring statistics and information on the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

April 19-21, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. each day -- African country display, Nebraska Union (first floor near computer lab), featuring African country posters, display of country flags, artifacts, clothing, interesting facts and proverbs for each country.

April 20, 6-9 p.m. -- Documentary film, "Rouch in Reverse," with discussion following in Nebraska Union (room posted). "Rouch in Reverse" is a reverse anthropology film that looks critically at subjective views on the primitive nature of the African continent. Master of ceremonies is Chantal Kalisa, UNL assistant professor of modern languages and literature.

April 21, 6:30-9:30 p.m. -- Entertainment film, "Mr. Bones," in Nebraska Union (room posted). "Mr. Bones" is a classic Nigerian film. Snacks will be provided.

April 23, 6:30 p.m. -- Festival of African Culture at the Nebraska East Union, northeast of 35th and Holdrege streets. With the theme of "Sounds and Sights of Africa," the event features dinner, performances and a guest speaker. Advance tickets are $12 ($10 for students) or $15 at the door. Tickets are available in a booth in the Nebraska Union and at all African Week activities.
